  1. Title: Upload the Pictures, and Let Google Photos Do the Rest
    Link: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/04/technology/personaltech/upload-the-pictures-and-let-google-photos-do-the-rest.html?_r=0
    Summary:
Google Photos has been introduced so that one is now able to take photos and upload them to the cloud, then later access them on Google’s image search. This idea originally came from Google Plus Photos. To use this, you must first upload all of your photos, and then you can go through and look at them in categories Google will automatically sort out. You also have the ability to edit and share photos. The storage is free to a certain point in which you must pay. The Assistant feature automatically filters certain photos and creates detailed albums for photos. The photos you take are private and you have the option to remove the location when sharing them if you choose.
This article relates to the flattener of uploading considering the entire idea of Google Photos (the focus of the article) is that one can UPLOAD photos to the Cloud and then access them through google image search. I exaggerated the word upload, as the point of this specific flattener is that one has the ability to upload any type of file that they so choose onto the Internet to expand access and technological horizons.

  2. Title: Bringing Internet To The Far Corners Of The Earth
    Link: http://www.npr.org/sections/alltechconsidered/2015/03/30/396391960/bringing-internet-to-the-far-corners-of-the-earth
    Summary:
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) estimates that there are approximately 2 billion people on Earth with a smartphone and internet connection, but about 5 billion people, or the remaining population is largely offline, keeping them isolated in a sense from the rest of the developed world. Two large corporations, Facebook and Google aim to introduce internet to the lives of the majority of the population with the hopes of gaining massive profits as people get accustomed to the internet and begin paying for it monthly. To convince those that are currently offline to begin using the internet, Google has initiated a project in which they are setting up balloons, and satellites in rather remote locations to bring forth the benefits of internet. Although this is being funded by the corporations and no money has been earned yet, the idea is to flatten the world by introducing the internet to everybody and become more interconnected through the web.
    Relevance of article:
In TWIF, Friedman states that anybody with internet access can become an attribute of the constantly growing internet, and by giving offline people internet, Google is helping us globalize and connect online so that less people live in a state of isolation from the world. Even poor people will be purchasing internet as prices decrease and it becomes more readily available globally due to the educational input of the internet and utility it can provide in schools. The article relates to and reinforces Friedman’s arguments about the power of the internet and as a result, these large corporations are investing in the internet, for what is likely to become a very profitable business.

  3. Title: Anna Swabey blogs about brain cancer battle
    Link:http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-tees-34055477
    Summary:
This article talks about how a 24 year old girl named Anna Swabey blogs about her battle with terminal brain cancer. She hopes that her blog posts will help educate people about the condition that she is struggling to escape from. This supports Friedman's flattener about uploading because it shows how the creation of blogs and websites such as Wikipedia that Friedman talks about still function to increase global connections, by posting blogs that she hopes will help educate people about brain cancer, Anna Swabey is Uploading information to the World Wide Web.

  4. Title: Hackers Appear To Post Customer Data Of Affair-Enabling Website
    Link: http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/08/19/432841063/hackers-appear-to-post-customer-data-of-affair-enabling-website
    Summary:
A group of hackers that go by the Impact Team uploaded 30 million users of the Ashley Madison website, a website for people looking for affairs. They offered a warning earlier in the year saying that if the sites were not taken down, they would be hacked, and they clearly didn't listen. A 10 gigabyte compressed file appeared on the dark web comprised of the names and further information on everyone. The hackers took offense to the morals of the site and the website provided a wiping service to clear an account but the only took the money and never deleted the information.
This relates to the uploading flattener because the information was uploaded onto the Internet for everyone to see. The is also connects many people together because the names and locations of everyone were listed. This uploading allowed groups of people to collaborate and search through to find anyone that interested them or concerned there lives.

Title: Influential Chinese blogger travels to America, falls in love with Costco pizza
    Link: http://theweek.com/speedreads/566748/influential-chinese-blogger-travels-america-falls-love-costco-pizza
    Summary:
This article is a simple explanation of how blogging has flattened the world. A popular blogger named Jun Song from China, searched the United States for his favorite tourism locations. On his trips he mentioned that his favorite pizza shop was in a Costco store in Seattle. It is amazing to think that his fifty five million blog visitors will likely see this and how many will go and visit.
The importance of this article and how it relates to and supports The World Is Flat is connected by the section heading "Blogging: Uploading News and Commentary" located in flattener #4 (Friedman 117). In this section Friedman talks about how anybody can create a blog and share their opinions of the world. For example Mr. Song shared his knowledge of pizza restaurants which now anyone in the world with access to internet can read. This shows how uploading content onto the internet is flattening the world.

  6. Title: Live From Small Town America: Teachers Who Blog To Stay In Touch
    Link: http://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2015/03/31/396394922/live-from-small-town-america-teachers-who-blog-to-stay-in-touch

In the fourth flattener, Friedman discusses the three forms of uploading. One of those forms is blogging. With blogs, people can share their thoughts and ideas with the rest of the world using a very simple and easy platform. Over the past few years blogging has became more and more popular. Blogging is such a flattener because it is another form of global communication and collaboration. People are able to connect with one another from across the country and across the world.

People may blog for many different reasons but this article talks about how teachers in rural america use blogging as a way to stay in touch with other teachers far outside the tiny rural school districts. Teachers are able to share ideas for lesson plans or provide advice for different teaching styles. Some teachers are having their students blog as a way to share ideas or discuss opinions about certain topics. This is one way that education is being flattened along with the rest of the world.

  7. Title: Russia is trying to block Wikipedia
    Link: http://theweek.com/speedreads/573529/russia-trying-block-wikipedia
Summary: The article I read about is that the country Russia is upset with Wikipedia's page that consists of charas, a type of weed common in India. The Russians would like the page to be blocked entirely. Unfortunately this would require the entire site to be shut down which is not going to happen. The article mentioned that the pages are rarely ever removed because of the joint work put into the pages. This article relates to Friedman's thoughts because he says that the foruth flattener has to do with blogs and joint works which wikipedia is. It is a website made of webpages that many contributers put together.

  11. Title: Facebook M: The call centre of the future
    Link: http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-34070539
    Summary:
Facebook has created the M which is a digital assistant that will allow the user to do complete more tasks and find more information that relates to what you may be searching for. It allows you to find information, book restaurants, purchase items, gift items, and many other cool features.
Friedman talks about how the people of the world are constantly look for change in uploading and sharing of digital and audio content. This may be the next big thing. Because it gives people a chance ton interact with a software but then you can share what the software finds with friends and family.

  12. Title: A Fashion Blogger With a Colorful Peruvian Backdrop
    Link: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/23/fashion/a-fashion-blogger-with-a-colorful-peruvian-backdrop.html
    Summary:
The article, by Oresti Tsonopoulos, is about a fashion blogger from Peru, named Katy Esquivel, who creates videos on clothing fashions and accessories. I chose this article because it showcases Friedman's assertion that blogs increase the amount of global connections, by allowing for people from all over the world to see videos uploaded to the internet about a Peruvian fashion blogger.
