TWIF Flattener #2 - 8/9/95
Use one of the current events sources linked at http://svhs-hwc-fall2015.blogspot.com/2015/06/approved-sources-for-twif-current.html to find a recent news article that relates to, supports, or refutes Friedman's assertion that 8/9/95 was a "flattener." Your comment should include the title of the news article, a link to the article, and a summary of the article including an explanation of how the article relates to this point. Summary:
Internet Explorer was the company Microsoft's first internet browser. However, it has failed to keep up with modern day demands and is losing against competitor browsers such as Google Chrome and Bing. A couple of reasons for this could be the older detail of the browser and because the speed does not compare with newer browsers. Microsoft's solution for this was to recreate Internet Explorer, under the project name; Project Spartan. The new IE is labeled Microsoft Edge. Microsoft Edge was released along with Windows 10 and is the new default browser for Windows 10. Microsoft claims that Microsoft Edge is going to be able to compete with other browsers such as Chrome and Safari because of the increased speed and more modern day look of the browser.
Internet Explorer was probably the most known and popular browsers of Microsoft when it first came out as it was new and one of the most efficient. It helped considerably against competition with other companies such as Netscape when the browser was brand new. However overtime new competing browsers were released and Internet Explorer just could not keep up. Which is why Microsoft has decided to create the new Microsoft Edge. This is a great example of the flattening of the world because it keeps competition equal among companies. When one company upgrades its version so does the others which keeps the playing field level and gives individuals choices. Since individuals are given choices not one company stands out too highly compared to the other and everyone is given a fair chance to compete globally. This is the prime definition Friedman is looking for when he uses the phrase; "The word is flat."

Summary:
This article discusses how a woman who moved from India, to the UK, then the USA can still celebrate Mother's Day with her much missed mother. The program known as Skype makes this possible, using the internet one can make a face to face call with groups of people and talk to them. This like Friedman's assertion that the flattener about Netscape greatly increased global connectivity, because Skype also is used by businesses that have their employees hold business calls from far away, it also happens over the world wide web that Friedman states greatly increased collaboration and connectivity.

Summary:
Climbers that reach the summit of Mount Fiji in Japan are greeted with a new site, free wifi. This meant to allow people to go onto social media or the Internet to comment on what they just did or learn more about the mountain.
This directly relates to Friedmans flattener about the web connecting everyone together. The integration of wifi allows people to go onto social media and connect with everyone across the world.

In the second flattener, Friedman discusses a lot about Netscape, a computer services company founded in 1994 that is best known for its web browser. Netscape developed a standard for data transportation and rendering. This standard was so simple and enticing that almost anyone could innovate on top of this platform. Friedman wrote: "It quickly scaled around the world and to everyone from kids to corporations." This example is very similar to app developers in today's society.
This article talks about the latest group of tech entrepreneurs - very young mobile software developers. Apple, along with other third-party companies like GameSalad, have created a simple, easy to use platform for developers to create anything from silly games to complex medical apps. Kids now have the capability to inexpensively develop an app, publish it to Apple's app store, and receive 70% of earnings if the app costs money or contains ads. These young entrepreneurs are part of a growing trend in the app developing community. With these new app developing platforms, it is easy for kids that are not even old enough for a learner's permit to compete with major corporations.

Summary:
Facebook is a social media site where it allows you to find friends, colleagues, and relatives. Facebook also permits you to share photos, links, and thoughts. Another app is Snapchat, which allows you to take a picture and either add text or art and send it to a recipient for a given amount of time before it automatically deletes. This relates to Netscape which enabled for many people to connect with other people. Social media allows people to connect with others that might be on the other side of the world.

Summary: Twitter is a social media site that started as a website and contains a maximum of 140 characters per tweet. Twitter is like Facebook in which you can upload you status, and pictures. However, it is more advanced in ways that one can upload videos and one can also direct message another user. The next leader of Twitter will most likely be expected to be “savvy business strategist and product genius with previous experience running a pubic community.” This relates to how Friedman says the first Word Wide Web that was put up was on August 6, 1991. This website was an introductory into the World Wide Web and in this website were directions on how to create your own browser or how one may set up a browser such as Google Chrome. I connected Twitter to this first website created by Berners-Lee because in the first website, were steps on how to set up a browser. I connected the two because as time passed, the creation of the first website lead to the creation of Twitter for it was a created website as well.

Summary:
Video-on- Demand services have been gaining popularity over the past years. The new technologies that are constantly advancing is allowing us to watch what we want whenever we want on any device. Different on-demand services have been making more money over the past few years because the new technology is very intriguing to new customers.
This relates to Friedman's second flattener because he talks about how the new technology of sharing and letting people interact other people on the planet around the world is in high demand. And the money that the on-demand services proves his statement.

Summary:
The article, by Nate Borg, is about a project funded by Google, called LinkNYC. LinkNYC's goal is to transform all of the old phone booths in New York City into WiFi kiosks, with free WiFi access available. I chose this article because it solidifies Friedman's claim that the internet is a tool to bring everyone in the world closer together, and to bring copious amounts of information to our fingertips instantly.
