  1. Traditional Authority comes from the power of the many dynasties of Ancient China. This power comes from the Mandate of Heaven and the teachings of Confucian beliefs. The power is exchanged in civil wars through the dynastic cycle. One example is the civil war between the Qing Dynasty and the Kuomintang. The Kuomintang eventually overthrew the dynasty and ended traditional authority.

  3. The treaty of Nanjing allowed the British within China to not have to follow the Chinese rules. When Britain gave back Hong Kong to China, they refused to let them influence it. In the boxer rebellion, one of the argued causes was that the influences of foreign powers and culture displeased the gods, causing a drought. The opium wars were caused by the British illegally selling opium to China, causing them to blockade British ports. After the war, a treaty was signed that made China pay for British war costs.
